The
island of Vis is the most distant larger island in the group of
the Central Dalmatian islands. It is located 45 kilometres off
the mainland and separated from the island of Hvar by the 18-kilometre
broad Channel of Vis. The area of the island is 90,3 km2 whereas
the Vis archipelago (Palagru˜a, Biöevo, Sv. Andrija, Budihovac,
Jabuka, Brusnik and others) has the area of approximately 103
km2. This makes Vis the largest district in Croatia. The coastline
of Vis is 77 km long. Regular car-ferry services connect Vis with
the island of Hvar and Split throughout the year and with Ancona
on the Italian coast in the summer.
The largest communities on the island are Vis
on the eastern side and Komi˜a on the western side of the island.
The villages of Podselje, Marinje Zemlje, Podöpilje, Podhumlje,
Podstra˜je and some others are situated in the interior of the
island. The island of Vis belongs to the least populated regions
of the Republic of Croatia, and 85% of the total population live
